Exercise: WA State Department of Revenue (DOR)

What?

WA State DOR stands for the Washington State Department of Revenue.

It is the primary tax agency for the state of Washington. Since Washington does not have a personal income tax, the DOR manages the other taxes that fund state services specifically Business Taxes and Business Licensing.

Who?

If you own a business in Washington, this is the agency you deal with most often.

  • B&O Tax (Business & Occupation): Instead of a corporate income tax on profits, Washington charges a tax on a business's gross income (total revenue).

  • DOR manages the Business Licensing Service (BLS) when you apply for a business license in WA

  • They issue the UBI Number (Unified Business Identifier), which is effectively your standard state business ID number.
